The Tour of Missouri Starts Tomorrow

Who needs the Tour de France? The world’s greatest cycling race (formerly) has become home to character assassination, career ruin, and just a bad time for the peloton. Sure, I tune in. Most cycling fans tune in, but then again over the top drama makes for great entertainment. Even so, I just want to watch a great race, not a soap opera.

But here comes the Americans to save the day (again... sigh). We did it with the Tour of California, been doing it with the Tour of Georgia, and now have added a third mini grand tour—the Tour of Missouri [via Velonews.com]:

The inaugural six-stage Tour of Missouri, the third and final of America's three "grand tours," kicks off Tuesday in Kansas City. The 600-mile course will travel a counter-clockwise route, ending on Sunday, September 16, in St. Louis. In between the state's largest cities are stops in Clinton, Springfield, Branson, Lebanon, Columbia, Jefferson City, and St. Charles.

Not only is St. Louis home to some of the best donuts in the world, it will now be host to a world-class cycling event. I wish I could be there. For all of us who had to endure two awful years at the Tour de France, it will be a welcome event to watch. It’s a fast, flat course that will favor the sprinters.

This is what the sport of cycling needs—new races. The old ones have become home to scandal and corruption. We need fresh ideas, new courses, and a new attitude. It’s getting to the point where I’d much rather watch the American mini-tours than the TDF.

What would be even better? Imagine Floyd Landis being vindicated on the final day of the race, or the day after. It would be a high point for cycling. It would be a symbol to all that the sport is rising from the depths of destruction back into the light of day.

Inspiration Has Been Medium Rare

Hi. How you doin''? Yeah, I've been here. I've been at the blog every day, staring, daydreaming, but uninspired. That's why I haven't written a damn thing on this blog for well over a week. Why? I guess the why doesn't matter. What matters is the solution. I stopped watching the news.

You have to understand that although I avoid politics and junk on this blog, I am a junkie when it comes to current events. When CNN came on the air in the early 80s I had it on all day. I probably got this addiction from my grandfather who was obsessed with the news. It could be genetic or it just could be the fact that as a student of history I like to see if we (humanity) are actually getting somewhere. Lately it doesn't seem to be the case. It feels like we are taking several steps backwards, ignoring history and instead acting like a bunch of scared bunnies. Now I like bunnies, but bunnies don't make intelligent, learned decisions. They can't -- they're bunnies. We're not. We're humans.

I'd like to get a few things off my chest once and for all. If you don't like semi-political commentary, please, look away now. I have to do this. It is my therapy so I can post about fun stuff. Just bear with me. Let me run down the list of a few things that have been bugging me.

Presidential Race

Why are we having debates now? The election is a solid year away. I DON"T CARE! Most of them get up there and lie anyway, and those that actually tell the truth will be crucified by the media or members of their own party. Some think they're entitled to the presidency (I don't need to name names here) while others don't have a snowball's chance in hell. It's a circus that means nothing and only fuels the egos of those running. It's more fodder for the 24 hour news channels that need something besides the car chase of the moment. Over the next year the candidates will move to the middle, the left, the right, and everywhere else just so that they can have a shot at winning. It makes me ill. Right now I know who I won't vote for and who I would like to win. I'll just leave it at that.

The Environment
As a science fiction fan I'm not ignorant to the plight of the planet. Earth is a small rock in the vastness of space. Right now we don't have the capability to go anywhere else. Hell, getting into orbit lately has been quite a feat and we're re-learning how to go to the moon. We are stuck here for the near term.

Living on spaceship Earth takes responsibility. We must use renewable sources for energy, building, and all that other stuff that we need as humans. It only makes logical sense. Oil is a finite resource. It made sense in the 1800s because that was the best that they had with the technology of the time. In the 21st century we need to think bigger.

The key to solving these and other problems related to being good stewards of the planet can only be found through science. Yes, scientific solutions are the keys to the environmental issues of today. Yet, the environmental movement is not home to logical scientific debate about solutions. Instead it has become home to anti-humanists, communists, and overpaid actors who have nothing better to do. It has become a religion unto itself embracing ideology and fear instead of the science needed to solve the problem.

Driving less is not a solution. Has anyone looked at a map lately? Alternative energy solutions including bio-diesel and hybrid technologies are. Using less is not the key -- efficiency is. As we advance we will continue to need more energy -- just take a look at India and China with their growing economies. And the only way to find new and efficient sources of energy is through science. The irrationality and fear mongering need to be removed from the debate immediately in order for us to actually do something.

I think all those one-sheet-toilet-paper celebrities and others who get $20 million to make crappy films should invest some of that money into actual scientific research that could actually save the environment instead of wagging their fingers at the rest of us as they board their G5s.

Kyoto Treaty
It's worthless without the participation of India and China. Their economies are growing and need to play ball with the rest of the economic superpowers. If they sign on then we have something. Until then, shut up about it.

New Congress
The New Congress is a lot like the Old Congress -- including their approval rating. The Democrats and Republicans pull the same antics and don't seem to benefit anybody. Why do we need more laws anyway? The country is almost 221 years old. You'd think we'd have enough by now. Maybe they can take a break.

Paris Hilton
I don't care. She broke the law, violated her probation three times, and came to her hearing twenty minutes late. Everybody else would get jail. She got jail. Hail to the judge. Why is this at the top of my news when we have three wars going on?

Dan Rather vs. Katie Couric
Thanks to CBS for saving JERICHO.

The Economy
There are a lot of people out there who say the economy is bad. With unemployment at record lows, the Dow at all time highs (including the S&P), and the fact that more Americans own homes than ever before, you'd think there would be dancing in the streets.

Thanks for reading the rant. I needed to get all that out. Now I can return to blogging.

Ken Levine: Thanksgiving travel tips

Link: By Ken Levine: Thanksgiving travel tips
Ken Levine has some really handy travel tips for this week. Here are some highlights:

Leave for the airport NOW. Especially if your flight is on Wednesday.

Bring no luggage. Wearing the same clothes for a week is a small price to pay.

Southwest has no reserved seating. Get in one of the latter groups boarding. You don’t want to be one of the first to sit then watch as fifty people glance at the empty seat next to you, then to you, and decide to sit somewhere else.

If you have children under the age of five tell your relatives one has an ear ache and make everyone come to YOU.

Those people in the Stand-By line – those are the same people who think they can get rich selling Amway products, and the Tooth Fairy really exists. Don’t fly Stand-By unless you like sleeping in airport terminals for five days.

I'm A Bad Bad Blogger

Yes, I am a bad blogger. Blogs should be updated regularly and hopefully everyday. I don't have much of an excuse other than apathy and junk like that. I've been doing a bunch of traveling and stuff over the past three weeks, so when it came down to updating this thing...well, the beer won. Beer always wins.

My wife Wendy ran the Marine Corps Marathon in D.C. It was a blast! She did awesome and I got to run the 10K with my father. The Marines did a hell of a job organizing the thing and there was always one nearby to answer questions and help out. We watched at the finish for Wendy and got to see the most amazing site. Marines were lined up along the finishing straight encouraging one and all to get across the line. We saw one young Marine propping up a young-lady who looked to be injured. He acted as her right leg so she could make it the last fifty yards and finish. After the finish, there was a bottle neck to get to the water, so several Marines took it upon themselves to grab cases of water and swim upstream, handing them out to tired runners. The whole experience helped deepen my respect for our men and women in uniform.

I attended Screenwriting Expo in LA a few weeks ago and got to see Harlan Ellison interview Ronald D. Moore. It was amazing! After listening to Ron Moore talk I realized that we both value similar things in writing. It helped me understand Battlestar Galactica. BSG is not about the best and the brightest trying to save humanity (like in the original). It's about this old, busted up ship with a dysfunctional crew trying to figure it all out. These ain't the cream of the crop, but society's screw-ups trying to organize, form a government, determine their purpose, and rediscover their humanity. Hell, who wouldn't green light that pitch!

After listening to Ron Moore talk, it was clear that we have a lot of the same values about honor, respect, and personal sacrifice. It had me giving BSG another try, allowing me to look at it from a different angle. Since then I am enjoying the series -- yes, I said it. Mr. Moore changed my mind. He's a great guy and someone I wouldn't mind working with someday.

So, I'm back here at the keyboard pledging to update everyday. With the holidays coming up, I'm sure most of us will be looking for an excuse to get away from the parties, endless small talk, and watching Aunt Mabel gorge herself of turkey flesh at the table. So I promise to have something for you to read, scream, or giggle at everyday. The Holidays are always portrayed as a wonderful time, but as we all know as adults, it's a bunch of running around, buying crap, eating a lot, and avoiding the PC police (Is it Holiday, Christmas, Winter Solstice, Uber Fiesta Funtime?).

Yeah, it's stressful. But it doesn't have to be. My message for how to survive is to determine what the Holidays mean to you -- not your family tradition, society's view, or anything else -- find out what it means to you and live that. Hold onto it. It will get you through. Just don't eat so damn much, work out, and make sure to spike the eggnog heavily.
